Short answer: yes, genuinely — but not in a way that should put you off. Pump foiling has a real learning curve, and knowing what to actually expect from a first session makes it far less discouraging than going in with no idea what “normal progress” looks like.
Most first lessons start on land or in shallow water: getting familiar with the board and foil, understanding balance, and getting a feel for the equipment before trying to generate any real speed. From there, a coach will usually help you into your first attempts at pumping — often via an easier setup like a FoilScoot, or with direct physical support to help you feel what a correct pump feels like before you have to generate it entirely on your own.
Genuinely, no — and that’s completely normal. Most riders don’t find a sustained pump in their first session; it typically takes two to four sessions of coaching before that first real breakthrough. A first session is much more about building the foundational balance and feel than achieving a full ride.
Watching an experienced rider glide effortlessly is deceptive — the timing, balance, and rhythm involved took them real, repeated practice to build. Pump foiling asks your body to coordinate balance and rhythmic power generation simultaneously, which is a genuinely unusual combination most people haven’t trained for in any other sport.
Coached lessons dramatically shorten this curve compared to self-teaching, simply because a coach can see and correct exactly what’s going wrong from outside — something that’s very hard to feel accurately from on top of the board yourself. Appropriately sized beginner equipment (a larger, more stable board, and a bigger, more forgiving foil wing) also makes a real difference.
Almost every rider who pushes through the first few sessions says yes — the feeling of a sustained, silent glide is genuinely unlike most other water sports, and the physical challenge of generating your own power is part of what makes it satisfying once it clicks.
